Users will no longer be able to purchase new titles for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops starting in March 2023, according to Nintendo’s announcement. According to the Pokémon Company statement following this announcement, the paid Pokémon Bank service would be provided free of charge as of the date of closure.
It may not be worth waiting until next year to get your hands on a few last-minute bargains if you’re looking for a few new games. The use of a credit card to finance your Nintendo eShop account on a Wii U or 3DS will be discontinued as of May 23. Adding money to your Nintendo eShop account will no longer be possible after August 29th. The Nintendo Switch eShop will continue to accept funds from consumers who have linked their online accounts properly beyond this date, but we don’t recommend waiting until then if you already know what you want to buy.
According to Nintendo’s current statements, existing digital game purchasers will be able to download their titles through March 2023 and will have access to them indefinitely. More than three years after the Wii Shop Channel closed to new sales, it’s probable that purchases will be available for many years to come, given that they can still be downloaded.
Naturally, this closure will have an effect on a variety of Pokémon games. Despite the fact that physical copies of games like Pokémon X and Y and Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will continue to be available, it’s very impossible to locate a new copy in the wild, and the secondary market price for these cartridges will only grow after digital versions are no longer available. Those who didn’t get a chance to acquire digital-only games like Pokemon Picross will also be unable to play them.
Despite all the doom and gloom, there is some good news. For all customers, Pokémon Bank, the paid download service that serves as an extension of the Pokémon Storage System, will continue operating for free following the cessation of eShop purchases in March 2023. As of this writing, the Pokémon Company has not stated a particular expiration date for the Pokémon Bank service, but this should allow gamers plenty of time to move their favourite Pokémon from Nintendo 3DS games to Nintendo Switch games. Players must have downloaded and installed the PokéBank and PokéTransporter apps on their 3DS consoles before the eShop was shut down in order to use this service.
