A ship undergoing maintenance might be decommissioned in 2023.

The USS St. Louis is slated for deactivation in 2023, but will receive repair this year.

The repair will solve a classwide flaw in the ship's combining gear, which hasn't performed well.

The modification will make the ship operable before it's decommissioned, a Navy spokesperson said.

"[The repairs] started as part of the new construction funded post-shakedown availability," Koehler said.

“It will enable unfettered activities on LCS-19 prior to decommissioning and OCIR status."

St. Louis is a littoral combat ship built to protect the coast.
