The absence of cross-play in Grand Theft Auto Online represents a significant opportunity lost

In light of the recent release of an upgraded standalone version of Grand Theft Auto Online, the potential benefits of cross-play would have been tremendous.

A new standard for video game longevity and relevancy has been set by GTA 5 and its hugely popular multiplayer mode, Grand Theft Auto Online. The game has now been released on three different console generations, demonstrating the enduring popularity of the title even today.

Improved fidelity and new in-game content have been added to Grand Theft Auto Online since its recent standalone release for current generation consoles, along with Grand Theft Auto 5. Nevertheless, it’s difficult to see anything but a glaring omission in the new Grand Theft Auto Online released the absence of crossplay.

Grand Theft Auto Online’s Resounding Success

First released in September 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Grand Theft Auto 5 redefined the GTA franchise’s expectations. Even though it has since been overtaken by the equally defining Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto 5’s intricate detail and groundbreaking scale helped it become the best-selling game of all time in 2017.

The game’s online mode, on the other hand, had an additional and perhaps unintended level of success. GTA Online’s multiplayer mode has grown to rival some of the best multiplayer games on the market, such as Grand Theft Auto V. GTA Online’s community-driven success has put the game at the forefront of Rockstar’s attention, bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars in annual profits via microtransactions.

That Rockstar recently released a standalone version of Grand Theft Auto Online for current-gen consoles was largely inspired by this success. This standalone re-release of Grand Theft Auto Online would have been a perfect opportunity to implement cross-play capabilities for PlayStation and Xbox as well as PC.

Crossplay’s Success in Modern Gaming

Today’s trend toward cross-play support in larger online games is a technical marvel that has been a resounding success. Fans across various platforms are applauding the rise of what was once considered an unrealistic dream. Players’ ability to collaborate and compete with or against each other across a wide range of the most popular consoles expands the possibilities for games and, more importantly, their demographics.

Call of Duty’s Warzone serves as an excellent example of how crossplay can benefit gamers. Within two months of Warzone’s release in March 2020, the online competitive shooter had 60 million concurrent players. However, despite the near-global lockdowns due to the Coronavirus, the inclusion of crossplay massively aided the sense of communal competition and the wider demographic pool that saw the game become so popular.

They may be two very different games, but both Warzone and Grand Theft Auto Online have the same level of importance in the gaming community. As with Warzone, it stands to reason that Grand Theft Auto Online would benefit from crossplay in the same way, with the possibilities crossplay could provide being limitless.

What Grand Theft Auto Online Might Get From Crossplay

Even though the term “console wars” is now a thing of the past, the fact that PlayStation and Xbox gamers still have a strong sense of community and friendly competition is still a factor to consider when looking at crossplay. Grand Theft Auto Online’s chaotic sandbox would have only served to boost the game’s buzz and organic growth if it had been introduced to these two groups of players. A look back at Grand Theft Auto Online’s infamous alien war shows that the player base doesn’t need an excuse to take sides.

Grand Theft Auto Online’s missions and linear game modes would have been an ideal place to introduce crossplay if it weren’t for the game’s sandbox and freedom. The inclusion of PlayStation vs Xbox missions, in which two teams from each console compete in racing and deathmatch modes against each other, could have enabled cross-play functionality.

Grand Theft Auto Online’s heists could have taken advantage of this formula, allowing rival gangs from each console to compete against each other for the attractive loot that heists offer. In light of the competitive nature of Grand Theft Auto Online, the cross-platform play would be a major selling point for cross-console play.

Grand Theft Auto Online may have cross-platform play for PCs

Grand Theft Auto Online’s hypotheticals should not be restricted to consoles. The PC version of Grand Theft Auto Online has seen a dramatic increase in popularity in recent years, mainly due to the intense online popularity of role-playing servers like NoPixel. Grand Theft Auto Online’s arrival on the current generation of high-powered consoles could have provided an additional benefit by allowing cross-platform play between consoles and PCs.

If console players can access Grand Theft Auto Online mods and the popular role-playing system, the game’s longevity will only increase. Cross-platform play may be introduced in the future, given how long Grand Theft Auto 5 and its multiplayer have been at the forefront of gaming.

Now you can play GTA Online on your PS5 or Xbox X/S if you have one of those systems.
